Dr. Palmer holds the Jan and Jack Creighton Endowed Chair at Washington State University where he is Regents Professor of Pathology & Infectious Diseases and Bioinformatics & Computational Biology.  He also holds an appointment as Professor of Life Sciences and Bioengineering at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology and as a Member of the Center for Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases in the University of Washington School of Medicine.  Dr. Palmer serves as the founding Director of the WSU’s Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health, a multi-disciplinary institute with the mission of addressing global disease challenges through research, education, global outreach, and application of disease control at the animal-human interface. Dr. Palmer currently leads disease control programs in east Africa and Latin America as well as directing the Robert R. Fast Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory.  He heads the Training Program in Infectious Diseases and holds a NIH MERIT award for research on pathogen emergence.  A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Palmer is a member of the Board on Global Health within the Institute of Medicine.  Internationally, he serves on the advisory boards for the Southern Africa Center for Infectious Diseases Surveillance, NIH Fogarty International Program on Foodborne Diseases in East Africa, and Consortium of Universities in Global Health. Dr. Palmer holds a DVM and PhD and is a board-certified pathologist; in 2011 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bern for his work in global health.
